Responsible design? (2/2)

Tuesday, May 15, 2007

As mentioned in an earlier post here is my latest helping on the interesting topic of design responsibility. All in all my presentation was received well as far as I am able to assess. Although I had covered everything I’d wanted to, there was little time for discussion at the end.

A comment raised was that more often than not, work assignments in the cultural sector offer the greatest opportunities in terms of artistic freedom (why is that?). Others said that it is often only the leftists amongst us that tend to take note of social issues against consumerism - that these issues do not penetrate, or have the desired effect on the majority. Another good point was that it is a challenge for us, because of the shift to a visual culture, to produce a powerful visual image because of the mass bombardment of messages we see each day. And because people have grown so used to visual images and their messages. Finally someone else mentioned that it is seemingly impossible to get your point across without resorting to the same sensational and attention-grabbing tactics that others so often use and abuse just to grab peoples attention.

I am glad for having the opportunity to look deeper into this topic, I’ll be keeping up with developments in this area, and maybe I’ll write more about it some other time.
